FIREFIGHTERS helped rescue a 21-year-old horse after it fell into a water-filled ditch in Elmstead.
Colchester Urban Search and Rescue Team and Chelmsford Animal Rescue Unit were called to the crime scene on Bromley Road shortly after 2:20 p.m. on Sunday.
Upon arrival, the crews reported that a large horse was lying in a ditch filled with water and could not get up.
They calmed the horse down with a vet and worked to get the horse out of the ditch and back on its feet.
The animal was rescued at 4 p.m.
Station manager Dave Bond, the incident commander, said the horse ran away happily with its owners after being left in the vet’s care.
“Thanks to the crews for their hard work under difficult conditions,” he said.
“It was great to see the horse trotting away happily.
“Incidents like this highlight the diversity of skills firefighters must have to achieve successful results.”
